Genesis 34-35

Genesis 34:30-31 NKJV

Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have troubled me by making me obnoxious among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites; and since I am few in number, they will gather themselves together against me and kill me. I shall be destroyed, my household and I.” [31] But they said, “Should he treat our sister like a harlot?”

Genesis 35:1,5 NKJV

Then God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel and dwell there; and make an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you fled from the face of Esau your brother.” [5] And they journeyed, and the terror of God was upon the cities that were all around them, and they did not pursue the sons of Jacob.

I do not know how to judge these events. As they say, there is wrong in so many levels that it is easy for me to say to myself “let God sort this out”. It could be that I would have done what Simeon and Levi did, even though it was borne out of deceit, and like Jacob was troubled by their actions when i read what they did. I too would have been afraid of the consequences of this blood bath.

That’s where God comes into this picture with a plan to rescue me. The Bible tells me that He put the “terror of God” upon the cities, so much so that they did not attack Jacob’s sons.

This encourages me to honour and restore the covenant I have with my God my savior.
