  3. Mark 8:13-21 NKJV

Luke 14:26-35 NKJV “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. [27] And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. [28] For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it- [29] lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, [30] saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish’? [31] Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? [32] Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks conditions of peace. [33] So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple. [34] “Salt is good; but if the salt has lost its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? [35] It is neither fit for the land nor for the dunghill, but men throw it out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”

You need to count the cost.

  • What does that include?
  • Obviously Holiness, but setting ourselves apart involves a lot more

Mark 8:13-21 NKJV And He left them, and getting into the boat again, departed to the other side. [14] Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, and they did not have more than one loaf with them in the boat. [15] Then He charged them, saying, “Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.” [16] And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “It is because we have no bread.” [17] But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, “Why do you reason because you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive nor understand? Is your heart still hardened? [18] Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember? [19] When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you take up?” They said to Him, “Twelve.” [20] “Also, when I broke the seven for the four thousand, how many large baskets full of fragments did you take up?” And they said, “Seven.” [21] So He said to them, “How is it you do not understand?”

  • Twelve baskets

Mark 6:34-44 NKJV And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd. So He began to teach them many things. [35] When the day was now far spent, His disciples came to Him and said, “This is a deserted place, and already the hour is late. [36] Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy themselves bread; for they have nothing to eat.” [37] But He answered and said to them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said to Him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give them something to eat?” [38] But He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they found out they said, “Five, and two fish.” [39] Then He commanded them to make them all sit down in groups on the green grass. [40] So they sat down in ranks, in hundreds and in fifties. [41] And when He had taken the five loaves and the two fish, He looked up to heaven, blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and the two fish He divided among them all. [42] So they all ate and were filled. [43] And they took up twelve baskets full of fragments and of the fish. [44] Now those who had eaten the loaves were about five thousand men.

  • Seven baskets

Mark 8:1-9 NKJV In those days, the multitude being very great and having nothing to eat, Jesus called His disciples to Him and said to them, [2] “I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat. [3] And if I send them away hungry to their own houses, they will faint on the way; for some of them have come from afar.” [4] Then His disciples answered Him, “How can one satisfy these people with bread here in the wilderness?” [5] He asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven.” [6] So He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground. And He took the seven loaves and gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and they set them before the multitude. [7] They also had a few small fish; and having blessed them, He said to set them also before them. [8] So they ate and were filled, and they took up seven large baskets of leftover fragments. [9] Now those who had eaten were about four thousand. And He sent them away,

“Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.” Mark 8:15

  • leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod
  • Pharisees Religious

Mark 11:32 NKJV But if we say, ‘From men'”-they feared the people, for all counted John to have been a prophet indeed.

  • Herod – Political

  • Herod Antipas was recognized as tetrarch by Caesar Augustus.

Mark 6:26 NKJV And the king was exceedingly sorry; yet, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he did not want to refuse her.

Both had fear of man

Proverbs 29:25 AMP The fear of man brings a snare, But whoever trusts in and puts his confidence in the LORD will be exalted and safe.

Why do you reason?

Reasoning, earthly wisdom, logic equals unbelief

Colossians 2:4-10 NKJV Now this I say lest anyone should deceive you with persuasive words. [5] For though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ. [6] As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, [7] rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving. [8] Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. [9] For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; [10] and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.

basic principles of the world vs God’s principles.

Mark 8:17 But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, “Why do you reason because you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive nor understand? Is your heart still hardened? [18] Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember?

2 Corinthians 1:20-22 NKJV  For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us. [21] Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, [22] who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.

Psalm 138:2 NKJV I will worship toward Your holy temple, And praise Your name For Your lovingkindness and Your truth; For You have magnified Your word above all Your name.

The cost to pay is remembrance of what the Lord has done.

  • That He will do it again.
  • Trust Him, don’t turn to or seek the world.

Psalm 143:4-6 NLT I am losing all hope; I am paralyzed with fear. [5] I remember the days of old. I ponder all your great works and think about what you have done. [6] I lift my hands to you in prayer. I thirst for you as parched land thirsts for rain. Interlude

Psalm 107:41-43 NKJV Yet He sets the poor on high, far from affliction, And makes their families like a flock. [42] The righteous see it and rejoice, And all iniquity stops its mouth. [43] Whoever is wise will observe these things, And they will understand the lovingkindness of the LORD.

  • Eyes, ears remembrance.
  • Testimonies, remembrance and walk boldly by faith.
  • Gifts vs willingness to move into what Jesus has won for us
