The Battle for Jericho

Seek God

Amos 5:4-6 (NKJV) 4  For thus says the LORD to the house of Israel: “Seek Me and live; 5  But do not seek Bethel, Nor enter Gilgal, Nor pass over to Beersheba; For Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, And Bethel shall come to nothing. 6  Seek the LORD and live, Lest He break out like fire in the house of Joseph, And devour it, With no one to quench it in Bethel–

Seek God and live

Let it be your lifestyle

2 Samuel 5:19-20 (NKJV) 19  So David inquired of the LORD, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hand?” And the LORD said to David, “Go up, for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into your hand.” 20  So David went to Baal Perazim, and David defeated them there; and he said, “The LORD has broken through my enemies before me, like a breakthrough of water.” Therefore he called the name of that place Baal Perazim.

2 Samuel 5:23-25 (NKJV) 23  Therefore David inquired of the LORD, and He said, “You shall not go up; circle around behind them, and come upon them in front of the mulberry trees. 24  And it shall be, when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees, then you shall advance quickly. For then the LORD will go out before you to strike the camp of the Philistines.” 25  And David did so, as the LORD commanded him; and he drove back the Philistines from Geba as far as Gezer.

Directions/instructions can change

1 Corinthians 10:11 (NKJV)  Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.

2 Peter 1:20 (NKJV)  knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation,

Profit = blessings

Bear fruit

There will be a difference

Isaiah 48:17 (NKJV)  Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, The Holy One of Israel: “I am the LORD your God, Who teaches you to profit, Who leads you by the way you should go.

The taking of Jericho

  1. Joshua leads Israel to the promised land
    1. Spies
    2. Jericho – Yeriẖo, is generally thought to derive from the Canaanite word reaẖ (“fragrant”), but other theories hold that it originates in the Canaanite word for “moon” (Yareaẖ) or the name of the lunar deity Yarikh for whom the city was an early center of worship
    3. Epithets say “illuminator of the heavens”‘, “illuminator of the myriads of stars” and “lord of the sickle”.
    4. The latter epithet may come from the appearance of the crescent moon.

Revelation 8:1-2 (NKJV) 1  When He opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. 2  And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and to them were given seven trumpets.

Trumpets in Revelation – 7.

War in Numbers

enemy who oppresses you,

sound an alarm with the trumpets,

you will be remembered before the LORD your God,

you will be saved from your enemies.

Numbers 10:1-10 (NKJV) 1  And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 2  “Make two silver trumpets for yourself; you shall make them of hammered work; you shall use them for calling the congregation and for directing the movement of the camps. 3  When they blow both of them, all the congregation shall gather before you at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. 4  But if they blow only one, then the leaders, the heads of the divisions of Israel, shall gather to you. 5  When you sound the advance, the camps that lie on the east side shall then begin their journey. 6  When you sound the advance the second time, then the camps that lie on the south side shall begin their journey; they shall sound the call for them to begin their journeys. 7  And when the assembly is to be gathered together, you shall blow, but not sound the advance. 8  The sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow the trumpets; and these shall be to you as an ordinance forever throughout your generations. 9  When you go to war in your land against the enemy who oppresses you, then you shall sound an alarm with the trumpets, and you will be remembered before the LORD your God, and you will be saved from your enemies. 10  Also in the day of your gladness, in your appointed feasts, and at the beginning of your months, you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; and they shall be a memorial for you before your God: I am the LORD your God.”

Joshua

Seven priests with seven trumpets

Joshua 6:8 (NKJV)  So it was, when Joshua had spoken to the people, that the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the LORD advanced and blew the trumpets, and the ark of the covenant of the LORD followed them.

The story in chronological order

First, renew your covenant with God

Get right with God

The Israelites were circumcised because the new generation had not undergone this rite during the 40 years in the wilderness.

Joshua 5:2 (NKJV)  At that time the LORD said to Joshua, “Make flint knives for yourself, and circumcise the sons of Israel again the second time.”

Joshua 5:7-9 (NKJV) 7  Then Joshua circumcised their sons whom He raised up in their place; for they were uncircumcised, because they had not been circumcised on the way. 8  So it was, when they had finished circumcising all the people, that they stayed in their places in the camp till they were healed. 9  Then the LORD said to Joshua, “This day I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” Therefore the name of the place is called Gilgal to this day.

The Hebrew term Gilgal  is thought to mean “a circle of stones”.

Everywhere else, it is “the gilgal.” This suggests that “Gilgal” is a type of place.

Gilgal in Hebrew is related to the word galal, which means “to roll.” Galal is often used to refer to rolling heavy objects such as stones. So in Hebrew the related word gilgal means a wheel or circle, or something that rolls. In particular, it seems to refer to a circle of stones, or to a circular altar.

Joshua 5:12 (NKJV)  Then the manna ceased on the day after they had eaten the produce of the land; and the children of Israel no longer had manna, but they ate the food of the land of Canaan that year.

Psalm 78:24-25 (NKJV) [24]  Had rained down manna on them to eat, And given them of the bread of heaven. [25]  Men ate angels’ food; He sent them food to the full.

Weaning is over

Manna was a wonderful mercy to them when they needed it. But it was the mark of a wilderness state

This teaches us not to expect supplies by miracles, when they may be had in a common way.

Joshua 5:13-15 (NKJV) 13  And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, a Man stood opposite him with His sword drawn in His hand. And Joshua went to Him and said to Him, “Are You for us or for our adversaries?” 14  So He said, “No, but as Commander of the army of the LORD I have now come.” And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped, and said to Him, “What does my Lord say to His servant?” 15  Then the Commander of the LORD’S army said to Joshua, “Take your sandal off your foot, for the place where you stand is holy.” And Joshua did so.

From all outward appearances Joshua thought He was a man.

  • He stood like a man,
  • looked like a man,
  • held a sword like a man,
  • spoke with an audible voice like a man, and
  • Joshua approached Him like a man.
  • Idols vs the Living God
  • Pocket Vs Personal

He claimed to be Captain of the host of the Lord. Joshua knew God was the Captain of Israel.

Joshua worshipped Him, and such reverence belongs only to God. If He had been only a messenger of God, He would not have permitted worship.

Joshua 6:1-5 (NKJV) 1  Now Jericho was securely shut up because of the children of Israel; none went out, and none came in. 2  And the LORD said to Joshua: “See! I have given Jericho into your hand, its king, and the mighty men of valor. 3  You shall march around the city, all you men of war; you shall go all around the city once. This you shall do six days. 4  And seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark. But the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets. 5  It shall come to pass, when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, that all the people shall shout with a great shout; then the wall of the city will fall down flat. And the people shall go up every man straight before him.”

The encounter reminded Joshua that it was the Lord who would lead the battle against Jericho and insure victory for the Israelites. The looming battle with Jericho required spiritual, not military, preparation.

Joshua 6:8-11 (NKJV) 8  So it was, when Joshua had spoken to the people, that the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the LORD advanced and blew the trumpets, and the ark of the covenant of the LORD followed them. 9  The armed men went before the priests who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard came after the ark, while the priests continued blowing the trumpets. 10  Now Joshua had commanded the people, saying, “You shall not shout or make any noise with your voice, nor shall a word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I say to you, ‘Shout!’ Then you shall shout.” 11  So he had the ark of the LORD circle the city, going around it once. Then they came into the camp and lodged in the camp.

We learn that there were

  1. Armed men
  2. Priests with trumpets
  3. The Ark of the Covenant
  4. Rear Guard

Joshua 6:20-21 (NKJV) 20  So the people shouted when the priests blew the trumpets. And it happened when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat. Then the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city. 21  And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, ox and sheep and donkey, with the edge of the sword.

Before that the spies

Joshua 2:1 (NKJV)  Now Joshua the son of Nun sent out two men from Acacia Grove to spy secretly, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” So they went, and came to the house of a harlot named Rahab, and lodged there.

Then the covenant renewed with the Lord

Joshua 6:22 (NKJV)  But Joshua had said to the two men who had spied out the country, “Go into the harlot’s house, and from there bring out the woman and all that she has, as you swore to her.”

Cursed

Joshua 6:26-27 (NKJV) 26  Then Joshua charged them at that time, saying, “Cursed be the man before the LORD who rises up and builds this city Jericho; he shall lay its foundation with his firstborn, and with his youngest he shall set up its gates.” 27  So the LORD was with Joshua, and his fame spread throughout all the country.

Curse because the Lord is not obeyed

Deuteronomy 28:15 (NKJV)  “But it shall come to pass, if you do not obey the voice of the LORD your God, to observe carefully all His commandments and His statutes which I command you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you:

Proverbs 26:2 (NKJV)  Like a flitting sparrow, like a flying swallow, So a curse without cause shall not alight.

Children are a heritage from the Lord

Psalm 127:3 (NKJV)  Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, The fruit of the womb is a reward.

Faith

Hebrews 11:30-31 (NKJV) 30  By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they were encircled for seven days. 31  By faith the harlot Rahab did not perish with those who did not believe, when she had received the spies with peace.

The Good Samaritan

Luke 10:29-30 (NKJV) 29  But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30  Then Jesus answered and said: “A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.

Thieves

John 10:10 (NKJV)  The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

Clothing

Galatians 3:26 (NKJV)  For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

Wounding

Acts 19:11-16 (NKJV) 11  Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul, 12  so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them. 13  Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.” 14  Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so. 15  And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?” 16  Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

Departed, leaving him half dead.

Zechariah 7:10 (NKJV)  Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, The alien or the poor. Let none of you plan evil in his heart Against his brother.’

Matthew 7:12 (NKJV)  Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

Acts 20:35 (NKJV)  I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”

Romans 13:8 (NKJV)  Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law.

Ephesians 4:32 (NKJV)  And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ forgave you.

Luke 12:4-5 (NKJV) 4  “And I say to you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. 5  But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I say to you, fear Him!
