Genesis 37-38

Genesis 38:29 NKJV

Then it happened, as he drew back his hand, that his brother came out unexpectedly; and she said, “How did you break through? This breach be upon you!” Therefore his name was called Perez.

Jesus is known as the Lion of the tribe is Judah. We sing songs about it, but even though I’d read this passage, it took me a while to take into consideration that Perez was the result of a father-in-law and a daughter-in-law; a sim according to God,  both facts the Bible does not try in anyway to hide. Perez is listed as one of the ancestors of Jesus.

Add to that Rahan, Ruth and Bathsheba, and what is written in Hebrews chapter four has a deeper meaning to me.

In Genesis 37:25 we read that the company of Ishmaelites, coming from Gilead with their camels, had  the  balm of Gilead (Jeremiah 8:22) with them, as they we’re planning to sell in for profit in Egypt, but it was unavailable to Joseph.

As Job said of his friends in Job 16:2 “Miserable comforters are you all!”, we may find no help, no comfort, in the company we keep, so as the Bible says, it is better to trust in the LORD Than to put confidence in man. (Psalm 118:8)

Run to Jesus Christ, especially when we fall, when we have walked away from God.

Hebrews 4:14-16 NKJV  Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. [15] For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. [16] Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
