Genesis 1

Chapter 1

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

  • Where it all started.
  • Did God exist before that? Obviously yes.
  • Saint Augustine had two answers to those who asked what was God doing before creation. Jokingly he said, God was preparing Hell for people who ask such questions. On a serious level, he noted there was no time before God created and hence the question is meaningless. When God created the heavens and the earth He also created space and time. Before time began there was only eternity. God is a timeless being and time only began with His creation of the universe.
  • Isaiah 57:15 NKJV For thus says the High and Lofty One Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, With him who has a contrite and humble spirit, To revive the spirit of the humble, And to revive the heart of the contrite ones.
  • The question of God’s activity before creation assumes God dwells in time. The Bible say that God has eternally existed and that space and time were created by Him.
  • God, the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, were not inactive before creating the world. God planned and purposed it before humanity came on the scene. Once we were created, God then directed His love and energies toward us.
  • All we need to know about God is what He has done and what He plans to do in the future. He has revealed this to us in the Bible – the Word of God. The Bible says: The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the works of this law (Deuteronomy 29:29).
  • Do you believe? Are you saved? The essential prerequisite (1 Cor 2:14; Jn 3:3). Being born again is more important than a knowledge of Hebrew or Greek. Aesthetic sense vs. “techniques.” Word used (1 Pet 1:23; Jn 1:18).
  • Prayer (always). In His presence (Gen 5:24). Be under the tutorship of the Author! (Jas 1:5, 6). The Word of God (1 Cor 1:5; 1 Thess 2:3).
  • Pre-committed to be willing and surrendered (Jn 7:17; Jas 1:22). Truth obeyed leads to more truth. Pattern: the Call; Obedience; then, Revelation.
  • Love of the Bible requires knowing your Bible; Knowing your Bible leads to a deeper love of Him.

Genesis 1:2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

  • If this darkness is the evil that we personify as Satan, then the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters was keeping him bound there as when the Millennial rule of Christ happens.

Genesis 1:3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.

  • Permissive, not creative
  • John 1:4 NKJV In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

Genesis 1:4 And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness.

  • Good is where God is.
  • Evil is where God is not.
