  • Ezra 1:3 (NKJV)  Who is among you of all His people? May his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem which is in Judah, and build the house of the LORD God of Israel (He is God), which is in Jerusalem.

Holy Communion

Luke 22:14-20 (NKJV) 14  When the hour had come, He sat down, and the twelve apostles with Him. 15  Then He said to them, “With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16  for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17  Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves; 18  for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” 19  And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 20  Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.

Jesus gave thanks

  • During the Holy Communion

    Matthew 15:36 (NKJV)  And He took the seven loaves and the fish and gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitude.

  • Before feeding the multitudes

    Mark 8:6 (NKJV)  So He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground. And He took the seven loaves and gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and they set them before the multitude.

    John 6:11 (NKJV)  And Jesus took the loaves, and when He had given thanks He distributed them to the disciples, and the disciples to those sitting down; and likewise of the fish, as much as they wanted.

We are called to give thanks

  • With Thanksgiving

    Philippians 4:4-9 (NKJV) 4  Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice! 5  Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand. 6  Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7  and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. 8  Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy–meditate on these things. 9  The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.

  • in everything give thanks;
  • for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you

    1 Thessalonians 5:12-22 (NKJV) 12  And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, 13  and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves. 14  Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all. 15  See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all. 16  Rejoice always, 17  pray without ceasing, 18  in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19  Do not quench the Spirit. 20  Do not despise prophecies. 21  Test all things; hold fast what is good. 22  Abstain from every form of evil.

  • giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

    Colossians 3:16-17 (NKJV) 16  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17  And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

  • Giving of thanks to God avoids
    • Fornication
    • all uncleanness
    • covetousness,
    • filthiness,
    • foolish talking,
    • coarse jesting,

    Ephesians 5:1-4 (NKJV) 1  Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. 2  And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma. 3  But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; 4  neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.

  • giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ
    • submitting to one another
    • In the fear of God. (v21)

    Ephesians 5:15-21 (NKJV) 15  See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, 16  redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17  Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
    18  And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, 19  speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20  giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
    21  submitting to one another in the fear of God.

  • giving of thanks be made for all people in authority

    1 Timothy 2:1-4 (NKJV) 1  Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and
    giving of thanks be made for all men, 2  for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. 3  For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4  who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

In the Old Testament

2 Samuel 22:47-50 (NKJV) 47  “The LORD lives! Blessed be my Rock! Let God be exalted, The Rock of my salvation! 48  It is God who avenges me, And subdues the peoples under me; 49  He delivers me from my enemies. You also lift me up above those who rise against me; You have delivered me from the violent man. 50  Therefore I will give thanks to You, O LORD, among the Gentiles, And sing praises to Your name.

  • It is God who
    • avenges me
    • subdues the peoples under me;
    • delivers me from my enemies.
    • lift me up above those who rise against me;
    • You have delivered me from the violent man.
