The Promised Holy Spirit

Two differences

  • Every religion is aimed at changing your behavior
    • to make you more acceptable to God
    • to make you more pleasing to God
    • to make you God like
  • No religion gives you the power and the ability
    • To be righteous, pleasing to God
    • To be holy
    • To have God’s wisdom to the extend of having His authority
    • To be redeemed from our sin nature
    • Self-effort
  • Jesus Christ came to
    • Redeem you and me
    • To fulfill all the obligations set forth by the law
    • Having fulfilled that, gave us Grace
    • All we have to do is to put our faith in Jesus Christ
    • All we have to do is to trust Jesus’ so that we can be reconciled to God
    • Our Heavenly Father
    • Gave us the promised Spirit of God to those who obey
    • To give us the ability/tools to conform to the image of Christ
    • To give us the ability/tools to execute our God given authority (gifts)
    • To be His ambassadors, to do His will
    • All we have to say is Fiat – “let it be done” (latin)

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, please give us a revelation of the power of the Gospel today. Enable us to understand what salvation truly is and how You’ve provided for us everything we need as a free gift through Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection.

Please enlighten us to these truths from Your Word. As we begin to understand Your grace, thank You for setting us free from guilt, condemnation, and a performance mentality.

It’s all about putting our faith in what Your Son did, and not what we do. From this day forward, may Your grace be the foundation of our daily relationship with You. Amen.

Promise of the Spirit

  • Part of God’s grace

Galatians 3:13-14 (NKJV) 13  Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), 14  that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Acts 2:13-17 (NKJV) 13  Others mocking said, “They are full of new wine.” 14  But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words. 15  For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. 16  But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17  ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams.

Ephesians 2:18 (NKJV)  For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father.

Rend the Heavens

  • An unpublished song – 2001

Isaiah 64:1 (NKJV)  Oh, that You would rend the heavens! That You would come down! That the mountains might shake at Your presence–

Mark 1:10 (NKJV)  And immediately, coming up from the water, He saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove.

Matthew 27:51 (NKJV)  Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split,

  • Schizō – break, divide, open, rend, make a rent.

The words that I speak

  • Jesus & the Holy Spirit.
  • The Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove

John 1:1 (NKJV)  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:14 (NKJV)  And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 6:63 (NKJV)  It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.

Acts 10:38 (NKJV)  how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.

Peace

  • Romans 15:33 (NKJV) Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen.
  • Romans 16:20 (NKJV) And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
  • Philippians 4:9 (NKJV) The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:23 (NKJV) Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • Hebrews 13:20 (NKJV) Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,
  • 1 Corinthians 14:33 (NKJV) For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.

Matthew 10:12-14 (NKJV) 12  And when you go into a household, greet it. 13  If the household is worthy, let your peace come upon it. But if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. 14  And whoever will not receive you nor hear your words, when you depart from that house or city, shake off the dust from your feet.

Genesis 8:8-12 (NKJV) 8  He also sent out from himself a dove, to see if the waters had receded from the face of the ground. 9  But the dove found no resting place for the sole of her foot, and she returned into the ark to him, for the waters were on the face of the whole earth. So he put out his hand and took her, and drew her into the ark to himself. 10  And he waited yet another seven days, and again he sent the dove out from the ark. 11  Then the dove came to him in the evening, and behold, a freshly plucked olive leaf was in her mouth; and Noah knew that the waters had receded from the earth. 12  So he waited yet another seven days and sent out the dove, which did not return again to him anymore.

John 20:19-23 (NKJV) 19  Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20  When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21  So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22  And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23  If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

Dove

Psalm 55:6 (NKJV)  So I said, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest.

Luke 3:21-22 (NKJV) 21  When all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. 22  And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”

  • Holy Spirit like a Dove landed on your shoulder
  • Be careful
  • Grieve – Character
  • Quench – Power
  • Wings of a Dove
  • Be at rest

Do Not Quench

1 Thessalonians 5:19 (NKJV)  Do not quench the Spirit.

Matthew 25:8 (NKJV)  And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’

  • Sbennymi – to extinguish (literally or figuratively):—go out, quench.

Do Not Grieve

Ephesians 4:30 (NKJV)  And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

Mark 10:22 (NKJV)  But he was sad at this word, and went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

  • Lypeō – cause grief, grieve, be in heaviness, (be) sorrow(-ful), be (make) sorry.

Right standing with God

Isaiah 32:17 (NKJV)  The work of righteousness will be peace, And the effect of righteousness, quietness and assurance forever.

Romans 14:17 (NKJV)  for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

Matthew 6:25-34 (NKJV) 25  “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26  Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27  Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? 28  So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29  and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30  Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31  Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32  For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33  But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34  Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Romans 8:10-11 (NKJV) 10  And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11  But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
