The Unwilling Body

2021 03 14

Romans 10:17 (NKJV)  So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

1 Thessalonians 5:23 (NKJV)  Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

A whole man is spirit, soul and body.

Spirit

Isaiah 59:2 (NKJV)  But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear.

Spirit is separated from God.

Soul

Psalm 42:11 (NKJV)  Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; For I shall yet praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God.

Soul is vanquished.

Body

Mark 14:32-38 (NKJV) 32  Then they came to a place which was named Gethsemane; and He said to His disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33  And He took Peter, James, and John with Him, and He began to be troubled and deeply distressed. 34  Then He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch.” 35  He went a little farther, and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him. 36  And He said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.” 37  Then He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not watch one hour? 38  Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

James 1:12-18 (NKJV) 12  Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. 13  Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. 14  But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15  Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. 16  Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. 17  Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. 18  Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.

Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.

What the soul desires, the body will fulfill

Romans 8:1 (NKJV)  There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

Do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

Judges 17:6 (NKJV)  In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

James 1:14 (NKJV)  But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed.

Flesh, without God, what was right in his own eyes.

Acts 1:8 (NKJV)  But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Acts 10:38 (NKJV)  how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.

Romans 15:13 (NKJV)  Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Righteousness

Proverbs 11:1-4 (NKJV) 1  Dishonest scales are an abomination to the LORD, But a just weight is His delight. 2  When pride comes, then comes shame; But with the humble is wisdom. 3  The integrity of the upright will guide them, But the perversity of the unfaithful will destroy them. 4  Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, But righteousness delivers from death.

Are we using dishonest scales when it comes to God.

Is He a side-chain with variable volume control, as in an audio mixer, instead of being the “insert”, where anything and everything goes through Him and His wisdom which is freely available to those that earnestly seek Him?

This is something that we all need to answer after checking our heart.

Psalm 52:6-9 (NKJV) 6  The righteous also shall see and fear, And shall laugh at him, saying, 7  “Here is the man who did not make God his strength, But trusted in the abundance of his riches, And strengthened himself in his wickedness.” 8  But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God; I trust in the mercy of God forever and ever. 9  I will praise You forever, Because You have done it; And in the presence of Your saints I will wait on Your name, for it is good.

But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God; I trust in the mercy of God forever and ever.

  • Olah – Hebrew – That which ascends.
  • Totally consumed.
  • Bunt offering, went up in smoke, nothing remaining, only ashes.
  • That which God sees in what Christ did.
  • What Jesus actually did.

Isaiah 61:3 (NKJV)  To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified.”

Leviticus 1:16-17 (NKJV) 16  And he shall remove its crop with its feathers and cast it beside the altar on the east side, into the place for ashes. 17  Then he shall split it at its wings, but shall not divide it completely; and the priest shall burn it on the altar, on the wood that is on the fire. It is a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, a sweet aroma to the LORD.

Genesis 8:20-21 (NKJV) 20  Then Noah built an altar to the LORD, and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. 21  And the LORD smelled a soothing aroma. Then the LORD said in His heart, “I will never again curse the ground for man’s sake, although the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done.

Philippians 4:18-20 (NKJV) 18  Indeed I have all and abound. I am full, having received from Epaphroditus the things sent from you, a sweet-smelling aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well pleasing to God. 19  And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. 20  Now to our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.

2 Corinthians 2:15-16 (NKJV) 15  For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing. 16  To the one we are the aroma of death leading to death, and to the other the aroma of life leading to life. And who is sufficient for these things?

Totally committed to Jesus Christ > burnt offering > Ashes > Beauty.

Living sacrifice

Romans 12:1-2 (NKJV) 1  I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2  And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

The Effects of the Fall

Romans 3:23 (NKJV)  for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

All are born in sin because of Adam’s fall (the first sin) in the Garden of Eden.

Romans 5:12 (NKJV)  Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned–

  1. God gave the first human couple freedom of will, and commanded them not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The couple also had the gift of spoken language, which was a part of creation (Gen. 2:16-20; cf. 3:8).
  2. The test was given amid an abundance of trees good for food. It was simple and direct – a test of the will of humanity to submit, as grateful subordinate creatures, to their all-wise, all-providing, caring Creator (Gen. 2:16,17).
  3. Satan, already a fallen angelic (Elohim – Nachash – Heylel ben shachar.) being, tempted Eve to disobey God (Gen. 3:1-5).
  4. Eve was lured by Satan through her talking with the tempter;
  5. his quotation of half-truths, and misquotation of God’s Word (Gen. 3:1-6).
  6. These ingredients of temptation are still available to Satan today.
  7. Adam fell with Eve. The Bible explains this as the fall of the human race, naming Adam as the head of the race. Neither Genesis 3:6 nor any other verse in the entire Bible excuses Adam because he fell after Eve’s fall (1 Tim. 2:14).
  8. The sin of Adam and Eve brought down the future human race with them. Mankind fell in Adam (Rom. 5:12-19). This is the uniform testimony of
  9. the Genesis account (Gen.3:16-4:9);
  10. the Old Testament (Ps. 14:1-3);
  11. the New Testament (1 Cor. 15:22);
  12. all human experience through ages of unremedied violence, misery, and suffering.
  13. With the entrance of sin into the human race came its companion,
  14. suffering (Gen.3:15-4:8),
  15. Death,
  16. the will to do evil, and
  17. inability to stop sinning, all came as a result of the Fall.

The corruption of the earth – its vegetation with thorns and thistles, and the carnivorous nature of wild beasts – resulted from the Fall.

The grief and suffering typified when Cain murdered Abel. Murder has continued unabated to the present day.

The world we live in today is not the very good world that God created (Genesis 1:31).

Adam’s disobedience toward God brought about several significant changes that affect not only each and every one of us but also creation.

  1. Loss of Righteousness
  2. Separation from God
  3. Cursed Environment
  4. Spiritual and Physical Death
  5. Clothing

The first shedding of blood, when God makes garments of skin after Adam and Eve sinned. God was showing that there will be no covering, no remission, without shed blood.

Now we are called to be clothed with Christ.

Galatians 3:27 (NKJV)  For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
Romans 13:14 (NKJV)  But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.

Keeping this in mind, we are going  to see four major events in Genesis to see how they affect us today.

  1. The Fall of Man
  2. The Flood of Noah
  3. The Tower of Babel
  4. The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah
