Hebrew:  Jehovah (OT:3068) roiy (OT:7473), the Lord My Shepherd. See Sixteen Jehovah Titles.

God is called the Shepherd of Israel (Genesis 49:24; Psalm 80:1; Isaiah 40:9-11).

  • Genesis 49:24 (NKJV)  But his bow remained in strength, And the arms of his hands were made strong By the hands of the Mighty God of Jacob (From there is the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel),
  • Psalm 80:1 (NKJV)  Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, You who lead Joseph like a flock; You who dwell between the cherubim, shine forth!
  • Isaiah 40:9-11 (NKJV) 9  O Zion, You who bring good tidings, Get up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, You who bring good tidings, Lift up your voice with strength, Lift it up, be not afraid; Say to the cities of Judah, “Behold your God!”
10  Behold, the Lord GOD shall come with a strong hand, And His arm shall rule for Him; Behold, His reward is with Him, And His work before Him.
11  He will feed His flock like a shepherd; He will gather the lambs with His arm, And carry them in His bosom, And gently lead those who are with young.

He predicts setting over them one shepherd who will be true to Israel (Ezekiel 34:23; Ezekiel 37:24; Zech.13:7; Matthew 26:31).

  • Ezekiel 34:23 (NKJV)  I will establish one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them–My servant David. He shall feed them and be their shepherd.
  • Ezekiel 37:24 (NKJV)  “David My servant shall be king over them, and they shall all have one shepherd; they shall also walk in My judgments and observe My statutes, and do them.
  • Zechariah 13:7 (NKJV)  “Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd, Against the Man who is My Companion,” Says the LORD of hosts. “Strike the Shepherd, And the sheep will be scattered; Then I will turn My hand against the little ones.
  • Matthew 26:31 (NKJV)  Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble because of Me this night, for it is written: ‘I will strike the Shepherd, And the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’

The doctrine of supplying lawful wants as well as needs is taught in both testaments (Psalm 23:1; Psalm 34:9-10; Psalm 84:11; Matthew 17:20; Matthew 21:22; Mark 9:23; Mark 11:22-24; Luke 11:9-13; John 15:7,16; John 16:23-26; James 1:5-8; 1 John 3:20-22; 1 John 5:13-14; 3 John 1:2).

  • Psalm 23:1 (NKJV)  The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
  • Psalm 34:9-10 (NKJV) 9  Oh, fear the LORD, you His saints! There is no want to those who fear Him.
10  The young lions lack and suffer hunger; But those who seek the LORD shall not lack any good thing.
Psalm 84:11 (NKJV)  For the LORD God is a sun and shield; The LORD will give grace and glory; No good thing will He withhold From those who walk uprightly.
  • Matthew 17:20 (NKJV)  So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.
  • Matthew 21:22 (NKJV)  And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.”
  • Mark 9:23 (NKJV)  Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”
  • Mark 11:22-24 (NKJV) 22  So Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in God.
23  For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.
24  Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.
Luke 11:9-13 (NKJV) 9  “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
10  For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.
11  If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish?
12  Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?
13  If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”
  • John 15:7 (NKJV)  If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.
  • John 15:16 (NKJV)  You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you.
  • John 16:23-26 (NKJV) 23  And in that day you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you.
24  Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.
25  “These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you plainly about the Father.
    26  In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you;
  • James 1:5-8 (NKJV) 5  If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
6  But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.
    7  For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord;
8  he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
  • 1 John 3:20-22 (NKJV) 20  For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.
21  Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God.
22  And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.
  • 1 John 5:13-14 (NKJV) 13  These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.
14  Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.
  • 3 John 1:2 (NKJV)  Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.
