Twenty References to the Messiah

  1. The Lord is the portion of My inheritance, or share in life (Psalm 16:5). This figure is taken from the idea of the general division of the promised land. The tribe of Levi had no inheritance, but were to live off the parts of the offerings which fell to the share of divine service.  God Himself is called their share (Deut. 10:9; Deut. 18:1-2).  All Israelites were to be a kingdom of priests to God (Exodus 19:6; Jeremiah 10:16).
  2. The Lord is the portion of My cup (Psalm 16:5). A figure of salvation or deliverance (note, Matthew 20:22).
  3. God maintains that which has fallen to Me by lot (Psalm 16:5). Another allusion to the division of the promised land. The Messiah’s lot was the redemption of the race (Hebrews 2:9-15).
  4. The lines are fallen unto Me in pleasant places (Psalm 16:6)-alluding to the division of the promised land.
  5. I have a goodly heritage (Psalm 16:6). Again, a reference to dividing the promised land. The Messiah’s heritage was the redemption of men and the restoration of the earth to God (Ephes. 1:10; Rev. 21-22).
  6. I will bless the Lord (Psalm 16:7).
  7. God has given Me counsel (Psalm 16:7; Isaiah 50:4; Luke 2:40,52).
  8. My reins (thoughts) instruct Me in the night (Psalm 16:7; Psalm 1:2).
  9. The Lord is ever before Me (Psalm 16:8).
  10. He is at My right hand; i.e., I have His constant presence and support (Psalm 16:8).
  11. I shall not be moved (Psalm 16:8; Psalm 125:1).
  12. My heart is glad (Psalm 16:9; Hebrews 12:2).
  13. My glory (tongue) rejoiceth (Psalm 16:9; Acts 2:26).
  14. My flesh shall rest in hope, because it shall be resurrected (Psalm 16:9; Acts 2:27).
  15. God will not leave My soul in hell (sheowl (OT:7585), Psalm 16:10; Matthew 12:40; see notes, Ephes. 4:8-10, and WHERE ARE THE DEAD?.
  16. My body will not be left to suffer corruption in the grave (Psalm 16:10; Acts 2:25-29).
  17. I am God’s Holy One; i.e., I am not the Father or the only person in the Godhead (Psalm 16:10; see The Trinity).
  18. God will show Me the path of life; i.e., I will be the first to be raised from the dead to immortality (Psalm 16:11; 1 Cor. 15:20-23). Because of this, I shall be able to lead others out of death.
  19. Fullness of joy is in God’s presence so I look forward to eternal happiness (Psalm 16:11; Hebrews 12:2).
  20. I will also have eternal pleasures with God (Psalm 16:11).
