1. God the refuge and foundation of His people (Deut. 32:4,30,31; 2 Samuel 22:3,32,47; 2 Samuel 23:3; Psalm 18:31,46; Psalm 28:1; Psalm 31:2; Psalm 61:2; Psalm 62:2,7; Psalm 78:35; Psalm 89:26; Psalm 92:15; Psalm 94:22; Psalm 95:1; Isaiah 17:10)

  • Deuteronomy 32:4 (NKJV) He is the Rock, His work is perfect; For all His ways are justice, A God of truth and without injustice; Righteous and upright is He.
  • Deuteronomy 32:30-31 (NKJV) 30 How could one chase a thousand, And two put ten thousand to flight, Unless their Rock had sold them, And the LORD had surrendered them?
    31 For their rock is not like our Rock, Even our enemies themselves being judges.

2. Christ the smitten rock and foundation of the church (Exodus 17:6; Deut. 8:15; Deut. 32:13,15,18; Psalm 78:20; Psalm 105:41; Psalm 114:8; 1 Cor. 3:11; 1 Cor. 10:4)

  • Exodus 17:6 (NKJV) Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.” And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.
  • Deuteronomy 8:15 (NKJV) who led you through that great and terrible wilderness, in which were fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty land where there was no water; who brought water for you out of the flinty rock;
  • Deuteronomy 32:13 (NKJV) “He made him ride in the heights of the earth, That he might eat the produce of the fields; He made him draw honey from the rock, And oil from the flinty rock;

  • Psalm 78:20 (NKJV) Behold, He struck the rock, So that the waters gushed out, And the streams overflowed. Can He give bread also? Can He provide meat for His people?”
  • Psalm 105:41 (NKJV) He opened the rock, and water gushed out; It ran in the dry places like a river.
  • Psalm 114:8 (NKJV) Who turned the rock into a pool of water, The flint into a fountain of waters.
  • 1 Corinthians 3:11 (NKJV) For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
  • 1 Corinthians 10:4 (NKJV) and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ.
