The Renewal

December 26, 2021

  • Revelation 21:1–8

1 Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. 2 Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God iswith men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. 4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”

5 Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And He said to me, “Write, for these words are true and faithful.”

6 And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. 7 He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. 8 But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

Jesus’ message to the seven Churches

  • With each Church, Christ shows that He knows what they are doing
  • He commends and praises them for what they have done well,
  • then He rebukes them for their faults and gives them counsel to Repent!
  • He warns them what will happen if they don’t repent.
  • This Counsel is given to ALL the churches except Smyrna and Philadelphia.
  • then He promises them rewards if they turn from their evil ways and come to Him.

The Seven Churches

  1. Ephesus (Revelation 2:1-7) – the church that had forsaken its first love (2:4).
  2. Smyrna (Revelation 2:8-11) – the church that would suffer persecution (2:10).
  3. Pergamum (Revelation 2:12-17) – the church that needed to repent (2:16).
  4. Thyatira (Revelation 2:18-29) – the church that had a false prophetess (2:20).
  5. Sardis (Revelation 3:1-6) – the church that had fallen asleep (3:2).
  6. Philadelphia (Revelation 3:7-13) – the church that had endured patiently (3:10).
  7. Laodicea (Revelation 3:14-22) – the church with the lukewarm faith (3:16).

  2. The message in all seven letters is for all of the churches of all time to know.
  3. The message is to each individual identified with one of the seven churches.

There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”

5 Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And He said to me, “Write, for these words are true and faithful.”

New Heavens

  • Isaiah 66:22 22 “For as the new heavens and the new earth Which I will make shall remain before Me,” says the Lord, “So shall your descendants and your name remain.

Large Size

According to the biblical description, the city is approximately 1,500 miles by 1,500 miles by 1,500 miles.

  • Revelation 21:16 The city is laid out as a square; its length is as great as its breadth. And he measured the city with the reed: twelve thousand furlongs. Its length, breadth, and height are equal.

High Walls

The city will have high walls.

  • Revelation 21:17–18 17 Then he measured its wall: one hundred and forty-four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of an angel. 18 The construction of its wall was of jasper; and the city was pure gold, like clear glass.

Golden City

The heavenly streets of gold will be in this future city, yet to appear.

  • Revelation 21:18 18 The construction of its wall was of jasper; and the city was pure gold, like clear glass.

Tree of Life in City

In the midst of this city is the tree of life, as well as a river.

  • Revelation 22:1–2 1 And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2 In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

No Temple

There is no temple in the new Jerusalem.

  • Revelation 21:22 22 But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.

No Sun or Moon

There is no sun or moon the new Jerusalem.

  • Revelation 21:23–24 23 The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light. 24 And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it.

No more tears

  • Psalm 56:8 8 You number my wanderings; Put my tears into Your bottle; Are they not in Your book?
  • Psalm 147:3 3 He heals the brokenhearted And binds up their wounds.
  • 1 Thessalonians 4:13 13 But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope.

No more Death

  • Hosea 13:14 “I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death. O Death, I will be your plagues! O Grave, I will be your destruction! Pity is hidden from My eyes.
  • 1 Corinthians 15:26 26 The last enemy that will be destroyed is death.

1 Thessalonians 4:18

Therefore comfort one another with these words.
