  4. He pities the third captain,
  5. and, encouraged by an angel, tells the king of his death
  6. Jehoram succeeds Ahaziah

2 Kings 2: Elijah Taken to Heaven and Succeeded by Elisha

  1. Elijah, taking his leave of Elisha, with his mantle divides Jordan
  2. and, granting Elisha his request, is taken up by a fiery chariot into heaven
  3. Elisha, dividing Jordan with Elijah’s mantle, is acknowledged his successor
  4. The young prophets, hardly obtaining leave to seek Elijah, cannot find him.
  5. Elisha with salt heals the unwholesome waters
  6. Bears destroy the children that mocked Elisha

2 Kings 3: Jehoram Meets Moab’s Rebellion

2 Kings 4: The Widow’s Oil; The Shunammite Woman’s son rasied; Stew and Bread Feed Many

  1. Elisha multiplies the widow’s oil
  2. He obtains a son for the good Shunammite
  3. He restores her son when dead
  4. At Gilgal he heals the deadly pottage
  5. He satisfies a hundred men with twenty loaves

2 Kings 5: Naaman Cured of Leprosy; Gehazi Smitten

  1. Naaman, by the report of a captive maid, is sent to Samaria to be cured of leprosy
  2. Elisha, sending him to Jordan cures him
  3. He refusing Naaman’s gifts grants him some of the earth
  4. Gehazi, abusing his master’s name unto Naaman, is smitten with leprosy

 

2 Kings 6: Elisha Causes the Axhead to Float; Arameans Blinded; Samaria Besieged

  1. Elisha, allowing the young prophets to enlarge dwellings, floats an axhead
  2. He discloses the king of Syria’s counsel
  3. The army which was sent to Dothan to apprehend Elisha, is blinded
  4. Being brought into Samaria, they are dismissed in peace
  5. The famine in Samaria causes women to eat their own children
  6. The king sends to slay Elisha

2 Kings 7: Elisha Promises Plenty in Samaria; Siege Lifted

  1. Elisha prophesies incredible plenty in Samaria
  2. four lepers, venturing on the host of the Syrians, bring tidings of their flight
  3. The king, finding by spies the news to be true, spoils the tents of the Syrians.
  4. The lord who would not believe the prophecy of plenty is trampled in the press

2 Kings 8: The Shunammite’s Land; Hazael Kills Ben-Hadad; Jehoram and Ahaziah Kings of Judah

  1. The Shunammite, having left her country seven years, to avoid the famine,
  2. for Elisha’s miracle’s sake has her land restored by the king.
  3. Hazael Murders Ben-Hadad and succeeds him
  4. Jehoram’s wicked reign in Judah
  5. Edom and Libnah revolt
  6. Ahaziah succeeds Jehoram
  7. Ahaziah’s wicked reign
  8. He visits Joram, being wounded, at Jezreel

 

2 Kings 9: Jehu Reigns in Israel; Murders of Joram, Ahaziah, Jezebel

  1. Elisha sends a young prophet with instructions to anoint Jehu at Ramoth Gilead
  2. The prophet having done his message, flees
  3. Jehu, being made king by the soldiers, kills Joram in the field of Naboth
  4. Ahaziah is slain at Gur, and buried at Jerusalem
  5. Proud Jezebel is thrown down out of a window, and eaten by dogs.

2 Kings 10: Ahab’s Family Killed; Baal Worshipers killed; Jehoahaz succeeds Jehu

  1. Jehu, by his letters, causes seventy of Ahab’s sons to be beheaded
  2. He excuses the fact by the prophecy of Elijah
  3. At the shearing house he slays forty-two of Ahaziah’s brothers
  4. He takes Jehonadab into his company
  5. By subtilty he destroys all the worshippers of Baal
  6. Jehu follows Jeroboam’s sins
  7. Hazael oppresses Israel
  8. Jehoahaz succeeds Jehu

2 Kings 11: Athaliah Queen of Judah

  1. Jehoash, being saved by Jehosheba his aunt from Athaliah’s massacre,
  2. is hidden six years in the house of God
  3. Jehoiada, giving order to the captains, in the seventh year anoints him king
  4. Jehoiada restores the worship of God

2 Kings 12: Joash Reigns over Judah, Repairs the Temple

  1. Jehoash reigns well all the days of Jehoiada
  2. He gives order for the repair of the temple
  3. Hazael is diverted from Jerusalem by a present of the hallowed treasures
  4. Jehoash being slain, Amaziah succeeds him

  1. Jehoahaz’s wicked reign
  2. Jehoahaz, oppressed by Hazael, is relieved by prayer
  3. Joash succeeds him
  4. His wicked reign
  5. Jeroboam succeeds him
  6. Elisha dying, prophesies to Joash three victories over the Syrians
  7. The Moabites invading the land, Elisha’s bones raise a dead man.
  8. Joash gets three victories over Ben-hadad

  1. Amaziah’s good reign
  2. His justice on the murderers of his father

  4. Amaziah, provoking Jehoash, is overcome

  6. Amaziah slain by a conspiracy
  7. Azariah succeeds him

  9. Zachariah succeeds him

  2. He dying a leper, is succeeded by Jotham
  3. Zachariah the last of Jehu’s generation, reigning ill, is slain by Shallum

  2. Being subdued by Shalmaneser, he conspires against him with So, king of Egypt
  3. Samaria for sinning is led into captivity
  4. The strange nations transplanted into Samaria make a mixture of religions.

2 Kings 18: Hezekiah Rules over Judah, Destroys Idolatry

  1. Hezekiah’s good reign
  2. He destroys idolatry, and prospers
  3. The inhabitants of Samaria are carried captive for their sins
  4. Sennacherib invading Judah, is pacified by a tribute
  5. Rabshakeh, by blasphemous persuasions, solicits the people to revolt

2 Kings 19: Isaiah Foretells Jerusalem’s Deliverance; Hezekiah’s Prayer and God’s Answer

  1. Hezekiah, in mourning, sends to Isaiah to pray for them.
  2. Isaiah comforts them.
  3. Sennacherib, going to encounter Tirhakah, sends a blasphemous letter to Hezekiah.
  4. Hezekiah’s prayer.
  5. Isaiah’s prophecy of the destruction of Sennacherib, and the good of Zion.
  6. An angel slays the Assyrians.
  7. Sennacherib is slain by his own sons.

2 Kings 20: Hezekiah’s Life Lengthened, Shows Treasures to Babylon

  1. Hezekiah, having received a message of death, by prayer has his life lengthened.
  2. The sun goes ten degrees backward for a sign of that promise.
  3. Berodach-baladan sending to visit Hezekiah has notice of his treasures.
  4. Isaiah understanding thereof, foretells the Babylonian captivity.
  5. Manasseh succeeds Hezekiah.

2 Kings 21: Manasseh’s and Amon’s Wicked Reigns

  1. Manasseh’s reign.
  2. His great idolatry.
  3. His wickedness causes prophecies against Judah.
  4. Amon succeeds him.
  5. Amon’s wicked reign.
  6. He being slain by his servants, and those murderers slain by the people,
  7. Josiah is made king.

2 Kings 22: Josiah’s Good Reign; Repair of the Temple; Finding the Lost Book of the Law

  1. Josiah’s good reign.
  2. He takes care for the repair of the temple.
  3. Hilkiah having found a book of the law,
  4. Josiah sends to Huldah to enquire of the Lord.
  5. Huldah prophesies the destruction of Jerusalem, but respite thereof in Josiah’s time.

2 Kings 23: Josiah Renews the Covenant and Passover; Jehoahaz and Jehoiakim Follow

  1. Josiah causes the book to be read in a solemn assembly.
  2. He renews the covenant of the Lord.
  3. He destroys idolatry.
  4. He burns dead men’s bones upon the altar of Bethel, as was prophesied.
  5. He keeps a most solemn Passover.
  6. He puts away witches and all abomination.
  7. God’s final wrath against Judah.
  8. Josiah, provoking Pharaoh Neco, is slain at Megiddo.
  9. Jehoahaz, succeeding him,
  10. is imprisoned by Pharaoh Neco, who makes Jehoiakim king.
  11. Jehoiakim’s wicked reign.

2 Kings 24: Jehoiakim; Deportation to Babylon; Jehoiachin; Zedekiah

  1. Jehoiakim, first subdued by Nebuchadnezzar, then rebelling against him,
  2. procures his own ruin.
  3. Jehoiachin succeeds him.
  4. The king of Egypt is vanquished by the king of Babylon.
  5. Jehoiachin’s evil reign.
  6. Jerusalem is taken and carried captive into Babylon.
  7. Zedekiah is made king, and reigns ill, unto the utter destruction of Judah.

 

2 Kings 25: Nebuchadnezzar’s Siege, Burning and Plunder of Jerusalem; Jehoiachin’s Release

  1. Jerusalem is besieged.
  2. Zedekiah taken, his sons slain, his eyes put out.
  3. Nebuzaradan defaces the city, exiles the remnant, except a few poor laborers;
  4. and carries away the treasures.
  5. The nobles are slain at Riblah.
  6. Gedaliah, who was over those who remained, being slain, the rest flee into Egypt.
  7. Evil-Merodach advances Jehoiachin in his court.
But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. (Hebrews 13:16)
