The number seven is said to be the holy number of God. The number seven symbolizes God’s perfection, His sovereignty and holiness. 1.) God created earth – seven days
Deuteronomy 7:1-2 – When the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee,
- the Hittites, and the
- Girgashites, and the
- Amorites, and the
- Canaanites, and the
- Perizzites, and the
- Hivites, and the
- Jebusites,
seven nations greater and mightier than thou; 2And when the LORD thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them”
OT Shadow of NT
Col2:16 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, 17 which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.
Heb 10:1 For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect.
Seven nations represents 7 types of evil spirits. These nations, which were literal people in the past, now represent 7 “varieties” of evil spirits, which are the evil counterparts of the 7 Spirits of God .
“What are the seven spirits of God?”
Revelation 4:5 And from the throne proceeded lightnings, thunderings, and voices.[a] Seven lamps of fire were burning before the throne, which are the[b] seven Spirits of God.
Revelation 5:6 And I looked, and behold,[a] in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as though it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth.
There are at least three possible interpretations of the seven spirits of God.
- The first is that the seven spirits of God are symbolic of the Holy Spirit. The Bible, and especially the Book of Revelation, uses the number seven to refer to perfection and completion. If that is the meaning of the seven in the “seven spirits” then it is not referring to seven different spirits of God, but rather the perfect and complete Holy Spirit.
- The second view is that the seven spirits of God refer to seven angelic beings, possibly the seraphim, the cherubim. This would fit with the numerous others angelic beings that are described in the Book of Revelation (Revelation 4:6-9; 5:6-14; 19:4-5).
- A third possibility is based on Isaiah 11:2 which says, “The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him — the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.” This could possibly explain the seven spirits of God…
- Spirit of the LORD,
- Spirit of wisdom,
- Spirit of understanding,
- Spirit of counsel,
- Spirit of power,
- Spirit of knowledge,
- Spirit of the fear of the Lord.
The Bible doesn’t tell us specifically who/what the seven spirits are, but the first interpretation that they are the Holy Spirit seems the most likely.
As we are going to look at the nations we are to conquer, we will study
When we look at the meaning of these nations’ names, we can begin to infer the types of spirits they represent:
| Spirit name | Meaning of name | Abbreviated explanation of effects |
| Hittites | Sons of terror | Subliminal torments, phobias, terror, depression, deceit |
| Girgashites | Clay dwellers | Focus on earthliness, unbelief in what cannot be seen |
| Amorites | Mountain people; renowned | Obsession with earthly fame and glory, domineering |
| Canaanites | Lowlands people | Addictions, perversions, exaggerated people-pleasing |
| Perizzites | Belonging to a village | Limited vision, laziness, low self-esteem |
| Hivites | Villagers | Vision limited to enjoying an earthly inheritance, hedonism |
| Jebusites | Threshers | Suppression of spiritual authority in fellow believers, legalism |
- Jebusites – City of David, Jerusalem.
- Bondages into strongholds.
- “The LORD bless you and keep you;
- The LORD make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you;
- The LORD lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace.”’
